Fiala, Arvidsson score 2 each as Predators beat Penguins 5-1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Kevin Fiala and Viktor Arvidsson scored two goals each to lead the injiury-riddled Nashville Predators to a 5-1 victory over the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.
Calle Jarnkrok also scored and P.K. Subban and Filip Forsberg each added two assists for Nashville. Juuse Saros had 34 shots for his first NHL victory as the Predators snapped a three-game skid.
Scott Wilson scored early in the first period for Pittsburgh. Marc-Andre Fleury gave up the five goals on 23 shots through the first two periods before being replaced by Mike Condon, who stopped all seven shots he faced in the third.
Arvidsson tied the score on the power play at 3:08 of the first period, and Fiola started a four-goal second with his first of the season at 2:26.
Vanderbilt rallies to beat Tennessee State 35-17
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Ralph Webb rushed for 125 yards and Khari Blasingame ran for 100 and three touchdowns in leading Vanderbilt to a 35-17 win over Tennessee State on Saturday night.
Kyle Shurmur completed 15 of 23 passes for 143 yards and one touchdown, giving Vanderbilt (4-4) its fifth homecoming win in the past six years. Vanderbilt fell behind 17-14 late in the first half before the rattling off three straight touchdowns.
Ronald Butler completed 19 of 30 passes for 285 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Tennessee State (5-2) in the second all-time meeting between the Nashville schools that are only three miles apart.
Patrick Smith caught seven passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers, ranked 25th in the FCS polls.
Middle Tennessee edges Missouri 51-45
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Brent Stockstill threw four touchdown passes to lift Middle Tennessee State past Missouri in a 51-45 win Saturday night.
It was the most points Missouri has ever scored in a loss.
Stockstill completed 23 of his 41 passes for 280 yards and added another 70 yards rushing on seven carries as Middle Tennessee State (4-2) amassed 584 yards of offense, including 300 rushing yards.
I'Tavius Mathers rushed 28 times for 215 yards and a touchdown, and also caught 8 passes for 48 yards and a touchdown for the Blue Raiders. It's the highest individual rushing total Missouri has surrendered since Auburn's Tre Mason rushed for 180 yards in the 2013 Southeastern Conference championship.
Missouri (2-5) had 629 total yards on 104 plays, its highest play total of the season.
Damarea Crockett had 29 carries for 156 yards and four touchdowns for the Tigers and Ish Witter added 19 carries for 121 yards. Crockett's four scores are the most by a freshman running back in school history.
Missouri's Drew Lock was 20 of 40 for 281 yards passing with two touchdowns and added 63 yards rushing.
Trammell, Mercer cruise past Austin Peay, 41-34
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — John Russ threw two touchdown passes and Kyle Trammell scored on a 50-yard run in the fourth quarter to help Mercer beat Austin Peay 41-34 on Saturday night.
Trammell, who is listed as a linebacker and came in with just four carries for 8 yards this season, finished with 97 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Russ connected with Marquise Irvin and Chandler Curtis to give Mercer (4-3) a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Kente Williams' 26-yard touchdown run pulled Austin Peay (0-7) within seven with 13:48 left in the first half, but Cole Fisher sandwiched field goals of 24 and 26 yards around a 6-yard scoring run by CJ Keckley and the Bears led 27-6 at the end of the third quarter.
The Governors scored 28 fourth-quarter points, but Trammell's long run and a 45-yard return for a score of an onside kick by Curtis helped the Bears withstand the rally.
Williams had three TD runs for Austin Peay.
The Governors have lost 22 in a row, the longest active streak in Division I.
Tennessee Tech edges Southeast Missouri State 21-20
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Michael Birdsong threw for 170 yards and a touchdown to help lift Tennessee Tech to a 21-20 win over Southeast Missouri State on Saturday.
Dontez Byrd hauled in the 10-yard go-ahead touchdown throw from Birdsong with 3 minutes left in the opening half to put Tennessee Tech (3-5, 3-3 Ohio Valley Conference) up 21-17. Birdsong completed 14 of 23 passes and Byrd had 97 yards on eight catches to snap Tech's two-game skid.
Southeast Missouri State (2-5, 2-2) cut the gap to 21-20 in the third quarter with a 30-yard field goal from Ryan McCrum, who hit a 51-yarder in the first quarter but missed a 30-yard attempt in the third.
Tech also got a 2-yard touchdown run from Yeedee Thaenrat in the first quarter and took its first lead one play later when Elliott Normand intercepted a pass from Jesse Hosket and returned it 25 yards for a TD.
