What is your mid-state commute costing you?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  It won’t come as a surprise to anyone here in the mid-state that Metro Nashville drivers spend more hours stuck in traffic that the average American commuter.

So how can our reporting partners at the personal finance website wallethub.com rate Nashville as one of the better places in the country to be a driver?

Wallethub rated Nashville 45th out of the nation’s largest 100 cities when it comes to driving challenges.

Analyst Jill Gonzalez says the city scores below average on the number of wrecks and the length of daily commutes, but that’s offset in the survey by the region’s low driving costs and the reasonably good condition of area roads.

Gonzalez says the costs of sitting in traffic are staggering.

“A typical American is on the road about 200 hours each year. That’s basically about 40 hours just stuck in traffic, and believe it or not, we spend over 120 billion dollars annually on wasted gas…wasted time and fuel.”

Gonzalez says that amounts to an average of $1700 per household.
