The World for 1-23-14

PRI's The World - with Host Marco Werman

Let the games begin...or not.

We're not talking the Olympics (set to start in Sochi in just over two weeks). We're talking World Cup. The must-go-to-event among soccer fans is set to begin in Brazil in five months. But there's grave concern that half of the major stadiums in Brazil are are not ready. All 12 stadiums hosting the games were supposed to have been completed last month; 6 missed the deadline. Host Marco Werman speaks with soccer reporter Tim Vickery in Brazil and our own (uber-fan) William Troop, who will be attending some games in June.

And if you have a slow computer, just think of internet users in China. They couldn't load websites for 8 hours on Tuesday! Instead, they got redirected to servers at a small drab building run by a company in Wyoming! It's not clear yet exactly what happened, but we'll try to crack the case.

We also have a fascinating story of a Bansky-style guerrilla artist who spotlights immigrants working in the wealthier parts of LA. Through his art, Ramiro Gomez aims to make these 'invisible' immigrants visible. And Gomez should know. He was once a live-in nanny/domestic worker himself.
