The World for January 7th

Today on The World, we take you to France for the answer to life, the universe and everything. In other words, as any fan of The Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy will tell you, "42." That's the name of a new French information technology school in Paris that's trying to shake up the old ways and make learning, dare we say it, a bit more American. Zut alors!

Also, a month out from the Sochi Olympics, Russia institutes what it's calling unprecedented security measures to try to keep the Games safe. We'll speak to a former Olympics security official who says this is hardly the first time the Olympics have gone all out in the name of safety...think Salt Lake City after 9/11.

And here's a story you probably won't hear anywhere else. For this week's Sideways Glance segment (you know, the stories that make us do a double-take), we'll tell you about Jalal Al-e Ahmad, who is called "Iran's Hemingway" by some. Reporter Daniel Estrin tells us about Al-e Ahmad's travelogue through, of all places, Israel.

All that, plus a look back at the life and work of Hong Kong movie mogul Run Run Shaw, the man who made Blade Runner a celluloid reality, and whose kung-fu films influenced the likes of Quentin Tarantino. Shaw has died at the age of 106.
