BBB: Beware Target Follow-on Scams

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The Mid-South Better Business Bureau is warning consumers could face still more scams following that massive data breach at Target Stores.  

The Bureau’s Nancy Crawford says scammers will now use the case as a backdrop to reach out to people by phone and email.

"Something this highly publicized makes the opportunity great for scammers to take advantage of this and pretend to be from Target, or a bank or credit card issuer, phishing for your personal information."

Memphis Man Becomes First Aerospace Online Master’s Recipient

Approaching his mid-60s and well into his second career after retiring as an airline pilot, Memphis’ Ed Owen decided to tackle another challenge in life — an advanced degree.

Owen wanted to go back to school at age 64 to pursue his master’s degree at Middle Tennessee State University. But with a wife, Mary, and a full-time job as flight simulator instructor for Memphis-based corporate giant FedEx, commuting to class wasn’t an option.

So he chose the comfort of his own home nearly 240 miles from Murfreesboro and joined the Blue Raider educational community online.

Mid-State Consumer Confidence Sees a Sharp Drop

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  -- After several quarters of rising confidence, mid-state consumers are expressing growing concern about the economy.

The December Consumer Outlook Index compiled by Middle Tennessee State University shows a 77 point drop from the September reading of 199.

Survey Director Tim Graeff says mid-state consumers are responding to a growing list of economic concerns.

Two MTSU Alumni Will Address 1,970-plus Grads at Dec. 14 Commencement Events

A special pair of MTSU alumni will be on hand Saturday, Dec. 14, to celebrate with an estimated 1,977 students receiving their degrees in two fall 2013 commencement ceremonies inside Murphy Center.

Mary Esther Reed, the first female mayor of Smyrna, Tenn., and holder of three education degrees from MTSU, is the guest speaker for the university’s 9 a.m. commencement ceremony Dec. 14. 

State Sen. Bill Ketron of Murfreesboro, a 1976 MTSU graduate and recipient of one of the university’s 1991 Distinguished Alumni Awards, will speak at the 2 p.m. ceremony.
