MTSU Researcher Walck Earns Chinese Academy of Sciences Award

MTSU biology professor Jeffrey L. Walck was awarded a “Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists” this spring at the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

“This award allows me to conduct research into the responses of plants to climate change in the Mu Us Sandland of Inner Mongolia, China, one of the four largest sandy grasslands in China,” Walck said.

Tenn. Unemployment Numbers Rise for Fifth Straight Month

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Tennessee’s unemployment numbers were up again in May.

The Tennessee Department of Labor says initial jobless claims rose three-tenths to 8.3 percent last month. The state’s unemployment numbers have risen steadily since January and are now seven-tenths higher than May of last year.

Dr. David Penn of the Business and Economic Research Center at Middle Tennessee State says the number of people out of work is rising in Tennessee, but doesn’t believe the situation is as bad as the numbers suggest.

MTSU Workshop can Help Students with Disabilities Prep for College, Jobs

A special workshop at MTSU on Saturday, June 8, will help students with disabilities prepare to make the big leap from high school to college and/or into the work world.

“Adolescent Literacy Institute: Transitioning to College/Work” will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in Room 160 of the College of Education Building at MTSU. 

The workshop is offered for students in grades seven through 12 who’ve been diagnosed with learning disabilities in reading and writing, including dyslexia, as well as students with other disabilities.

Tennessee Home Values Rising, but Slowly


MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A new report suggests that home values are rising far more slowly in Tennessee than in much of the nation.

An analysis of home values by the Business and Economic Research Center at Middle Tennessee State University shows that Tennessee home prices rose by 0.9 percent in the past year. Nationwide, home values rose at more than twice that rate.

Confucius Institute Hosts Chinese Culture Summer Camp

MTSU’s Confucius Institute is hosting a different kind of summer day camp filled with fun for youngsters ages 7 through 12.

The Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp is scheduled for June 10-14 in Room 106 of Peck Hall on the MTSU campus.

Activities include formal language lessons in basic vocabulary and conversation. Youngsters also will experience Chinese culture through games, crafts, calligraphy and art.

Courses and activities will start at 9 a.m. Parents may drop off their children as early as 8 a.m. and pick them up at 4:30 p.m.
