MTSU Women Stand Up for More Money on Equal Pay Day

Middle Tennessee State University will spend Tuesday, April 9, reminding the public that women still do not receive equal pay for equal work.

MTSU will observe Equal Pay Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with information booths at the Keathley University Center and the Student Union Building.

“American women early only 77 cents for every dollar that a man earns,” said Dr. Ayne Cantrell, communications officer of the Murfreesboro branch of the American Association of University Women and a former MTSU professor.

Federal Cuts Pinch Vanderbilt Hospital

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt University Medical Center officials say federal automatic budget cuts require tough economic measures be taken.

The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/Z6IddpZ ) reported the hospital must make up for a $20 million shortfall by June 30.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Jeff Balser said the federal cuts mean payments are no longer being made to hospitals like Vanderbilt which treat a disproportionate number of indigent patients.

County Jobless Numbers Good News for Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The Tennessee Department of Labor has released county level unemployment numbers for February and the report is good news for the mid-state.

Six of the ten counties with the state’s lowest unemployment are located here in Middle Tennessee. Williamson County continues to enjoy the state’s best jobless rate at 5.3 percent. That’s nearly a full percentage point below the next closest county.

Mid-State County Has One of the Nations Hottest Job Markets

WASHINGTON (AP/WMOT) — Federal statistics out Thursday show the nation’s economy grew at a decidedly anemic pace last year, but the economic news is much better for one at least one mid-state county.

The Commerce Department says the U.S. economy grew at an annual rate 0.4 percent in last year’s final quarter. Analysts think the nation's economy is growing at much faster clip in the current quarter; perhaps as much as 2.5 percent.
