Tennessee Exports Continue to Rebound

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The U.S. Department of Commerce says Tennessee is exporting goods at a record pace this year.

Tennessee had exports totaling $15.7 billion in the first half of the 2012, up $1.1 billion or about eight percent over the same period in 2011.

Dr. Steven Livingston is an economist with the Business and Economics Research Center at Middle Tennessee State University. He says Tennessee exports began rebounding in 2011, led by the transportation sector.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  --  WMOT News continues to explore those thin slices of the state economy that prospered during the economic downturn as part a series of stories called “Tennessee Works.”

The state’s export sector took a nose dive right along with the rest of the economy during the recession. But one category of exports bucked that trend and continued to expand each year of the downturn.

MTSU Economist Says Exports Up 15% in 2011

Tenn. Exports Rebound to Pre-Recession Levels

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Tennessee’s exports have reached pre-recession levels according to an economist with Middle Tennessee State University.

Dr. Steven Livingston is with the Business and Economics Research Center at MTSU. He says Tennessee exports were up 15 percent in 2011. Livingston says that last year the state exported more than $29 billion worth of products.
