Education in Tennessee Would See Deep Cuts

MTSU Prof. Warns About "Super" Budget Cuts

The congressional "Super Committee" appears to be making little progress in its goal of cutting $1.2 trillion from the federal budget.

If the committee fails to come to agreement, then $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts will go into effect.

Dr. Murat Arik, a researcher with the Middle Tennessee State University Center for Business and Economic Research says Tennessee will be deeply impacted.

Dr. Arik says federal education dollars that normally flow to Tennessee would likely be among the first casualties.

MTSU Team is Defending Champion

Battle of the Brains Held at MTSU

Nine universities will compete tomorrow in a computer programming contest here in Murfreesboro at Middle Tennessee State University.

MTSU, Vanderbilt, East Tennessee State, North Alabama, Maryville, Belmont, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State will participate in what’s commonly called “The Battle of the Brains.”

Dr. Chrisila Petty, Chair of the Department of Computer Sciences at MTSU, says the university's team is the defending champion. The winner will advance to national and possibly international competitions.

     I made a silly mistake in class last year, and asked my students how many of them remember the riots that helped end the Vietnam War.  Of the 40-some students, only one was old enough to remember those days of demonstrations, tear gas and arrests.

"Freedom Sings" Returns to Tennessee

          The multimedia experience Freedom Sings opens this afternoon at 2:20 in the Tucker Theater here on the Middle Tennessee State campus.

          Freedom Sings is a celebration of America’s protest music, banned and censored songs. The show debuted at the Bluebird Café in 1999 and now tours nationwide.

MTSU Loses 45-20 to Louisiana

Blue Raiders Lose to Louisiana

Blue Raiders football had another disappointing weekend, losing to Louisiana 45-20 before a hometown crowd of 13,500.  Chip Walters provides this game recap:

Middle Tennessee never got on track either side of the ball.

The Blue Raiders inducted five new members into their athletic hall of fame earlier in the day but could not close the monumental occasion with a win at night. 

Logan Kilgore threw for 239 yards on 22-of-40 passes, including a high of seven to Malcolm Beyah for 86 yards and the lone touchdown toss.
