MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (HUBBARD)  --  The opening ceremonies for the 2012 Olympic Games are set for Friday evening. WMOT News has discovered a surprising number of Mid-State connections to the games.

Tommy Haynes was a three-time All American under Middle Tennessee State track coach Dean Hayes. Haynes broke the NCAA and national records in the triple jump and set the top mark for an American at the 1975 Pan-American Games.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Steve Peterson has retired after 25 seasons as head baseball coach at Middle Tennessee State University.

Peterson, who announced his retirement Thursday, compiled a 791-637-3 record with the Blue Raiders. His teams played in nine NCAA regional tourneys.

Jim McGuire, associate head coach, was named interim head coach.

Peterson also was head coach at Roane State Community College from 1979 to 1984.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Nelson)  --  Middle Tennessee State University is the only school in the Mid-State, and only one of two schools in Tennessee selected to participate in the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Golf Championships.

The announcement was made by The Men’s Golf Selection Committee’s ranking show on NCAA.com and this will be MTSU’s 5th consecutive year involved.

The University of Tennessee in Knoxville and a Vanderbilt University student, Adam Hofmann were also selected.

The Blue Raiders have won a NCAA berth six times in the program’s history.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A day and time has been announced for the MTSU/UT post season men’s basketball matchup.

The National Invitation Tournament game will tip off at 6 p.m. CT this Monday evening in Knoxville.  Middle Tennessee State has won only a single game in nine meetings between the in-state rivals, but that lone win did come during an NIT game in 1988.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  --  A heartbreaking defeat Tuesday afternoon for Lady Raider’s basketball.  The MT women suffered a cliff-hanger, single-point loss to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

The 71-70 defeat ended the team's winning streak at 20 games and dashed their hopes for a seventh Sun Belt Tournament title. The men’s team was knocked out of the tournament in the first round.

While post season play hasn’t panned out well for Blue Raiders basketball, at least so far, MTSU spokesman Mark Owens said fans couldn’t have asked for a better year.
