Tuition Increases Approved for TBR Schools

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  --  The Tennessee Board of Regents has voted to increase tuition at the system’s six universities, 13 colleges and 27 technical schools.  

The Regents approved the measure in Memphis on Friday during their quarterly meeting. 

Students at the University of Memphis will see the largest increase, paying $269 more per semester. TBR community college students will see an increase of $75  to $85 per semester.

In a press statement, the TBR says each school requested increases based on its particular needs.

Haslam Responds to Calls for Legislative Session

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (AP/WMOT) — The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees have approved tuition hikes that range from 8 percent at the Knoxville campus to 3.5 percent at the university's College of Law.

UT President Joe DiPietro told reporters after the vote Thursday that nobody wants tuition hikes, but there’s little alternative.

MTSU Tuition Increase to Address Faculty Imbalance

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Middle Tennessee State University is asking for a tuition increase, saying it needs the money - in part - to address a faculty imbalance.

The finance committee of the state Board of Regents met Tuesday and unanimously recommended increases at its six universities, 13 community colleges and 27 technology centers.

The proposed hikes vary in size. Students at Middle Tennessee State University would see a 6.8 percent rise in tuition if the plan is approved.

More College Tuition Hikes Likely on the Way

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — University students in Tennessee are likely facing still more tuition increases.

The finance committee of the state Board of Regents met Tuesday and unanimously recommended increases at its six universities, 13 community colleges and 27 technology centers.

The proposed hikes vary in size, with East Tennessee State University seeing the highest increase at 7.2 percent. Austin Peay made the smallest request at 3.4 percent.

Students here at Middle Tennessee State University would see a 6.8 percent tuition increase if the plan is approved.

MTSU Making Efforts to Increase Graduation Rate

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Middle Tennessee State University is making efforts to increase its graduation rate. Just over half its students are currently completing college within six years.

According to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, 53 percent of MTSU students who began in fall 2004 graduated by 2010. That was fourth best among the state's four-year public universities. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, was tops with 67 percent. Tennessee Tech had a 55 percent graduation rate, and UT-Martin's rate was 54 percent.

Phillip Oldham Currently Vice Chancellor at UTC

Tennessee Tech Gets A New President

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The Tennessee Board of Regents has named a new President for Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville. The Regents have awarded the post to Phillip Oldham. 

Dr. Oldham is currently serving as provost and senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at U.T. Chattanooga. He'll replace current TTU President Bob Bell, who plans to retire in July after 12 years as the school’s leader.

TBR Chancellor John Morgan says Oldham’s background in science is timely.
