Mid-State's Syrian Émigrés Watch Conflict Unfold

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — The Syrian-American community here in Middle Tennessee is following the fighting in Syria closely.

NATO will hold emergency talks tomorrow to discuss Syria's downing of a Turkish jet fighter on Friday, but the alliance isn’t expected to take military action even if it finds Syria at fault.

Meanwhile the killing continues. Some 40 people were reported killed in Syria yesterday in new clashes between rebels and government troops. Opposition activists say the conflict has killed 14,000 people, mostly civilians, over the past 15 months.

Triple-Digit Temps in Tennessee by Friday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Temperatures across Tennessee are predicted to build during the week, reaching triple-digit readings by Friday.

The National Weather Service forecasts call for late week high temperatures of 101 degrees in Nashville and Clarksville and 100 degrees in Memphis.

Even the uplands will be hot — reaching 95 degrees in Gatlinburg and 94 in Crossville.

Grammy Camp Comes to Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Students from all over the country are here in Middle Tennessee this week to attend Grammy Camp.

The Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences puts on the camps through its Grammy Foundation. According to Foundation spokesman David Series about 30 students were invited to attend the Nashville camp.

“We want high school students to understand about the entire music industry, so we provide them information and instruction on the industry.”

Mosque "Enforcement Action" to be Announced Thursday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Federal prosecutors are taking criminal action related to a mosque under construction in Tennessee that's been hit by arsonists and vandals and opposed in court.

U.S. Attorney Jerry E. Martin is holding a news conference Thursday afternoon at the building site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. Agents from the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also will attend.

Officials from those federal agencies declined to release more details before the announcement.

Tuition Will Likely Rise at UT Institutions

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Students in the University of Tennessee system will find out this week how much their tuition will be in the fall.

The finance committee of the UT Board of Trustees is scheduled to make the tuition projections on Wednesday and the full board will vote on them Thursday.

The university system has an enrollment of about 50,000 students at campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Martin; the Health Science Center in Memphis; state Institutes of Agriculture and Public Service; and the Space Institute in Tullahoma.
