TBI: 4-Year-Old Shoots and Kills Deputy's Wife

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Authorities say a 4-year-old shot and killed the wife of a Wilson County sheriff's deputy over the weekend.

The shooting took place inside the Lebanon home of Deputy Daniel Fanning. Authorities say the deputy and a friend were looking at firearms in a bedroom when a 4-year-old, who was also in the room, picked up a gun and pulled the trigger.

The weapon was loaded and discharged once and hitting Josephine Fanning. The deputy’s 48-year-old wife was pronounced dead at the scene.

Growth of Murfeesboro Airport Prompts Fire Training

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  --  Members of the Murfreesboro Fire Department will train this week  at Smyrna Airport on how to handle aircraft emergencies.

The three day course includes training in aviation fire suppression, general airfield safety, airport terminology, and search procedures for locating downed aircraft.

Department spokesperson Ashley McDonald says changes at the Murfeesboro airport, and courses at Middle Tennessee State University,   prompted Chief Cumbey Gaines to send his firefighters for the training in Smyrna.

Tennessee Senate Hosts "Geography of Hate" Projects

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Student projects that show the  geographic distribution of hate groups found here in Tennessee will be on display in the capital building next week.

Middle Tennessee State University’s Dr. Patricia Boda asked students in her cartography class to create maps for a project she entitled the “Geography of Hate.”

One student created maps detailing the forced eviction of Native Americans from their ancestral lands in the 1830s Trail of Tears exodus. Others focused on the Holocaust and more recent instances of genocide in Sudan and Rawanda.

Man Arrested Trying to Enter Almaville Girl's Home

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A 46 year-old McEwen man has been charged with statutory rape after he was arrested trying to enter the home of an Almaville girl.

According to detectives with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department, Harry John Leschen met the underage teen two months ago in an internet chat room. Officials say the two began a sexual relationship about two weeks ago.

Police say Leschen was meeting the girl in her Almaville home, initially while her parents were away, but more recently at night while the parents were asleep.

Bill Linking Welfare to School Progress Advances

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A House committee has approved a measure linking welfare benefits to student performance a day after Gov. Haslam expressed serious reservations about the measure.

The House Health Committee Wednesday voted to advance the bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Vance Dennis of Savannah.

The measure would cut a family’s welfare benefits if a child fails to "maintain satisfactory academic progress."
