Benefit for MTSU Student Who Died of Meningitis

MURFREESBORO, TN (AP/WMOT) – A benefit will be held Sunday night in Murfreesboro for the family of former Middle Tennessee State University student Jacob Nunley.

Nunley died at Vanderbilt Medical Center September 10th while being treated for bacterial meningitis.

Eighteen year-old Nunley was a Dyersburg native, a freshmen at MTSU, and a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

WSMV-TV reports that the fraternity will hold a benefit for Nunley’s family Sunday night at the Boulevard Bar and Grill in Murfreesboro from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Tenn. Jobless Rate Up 4 Months in a Row

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee's unemployment rate rose slightly in August to 8.5 percent, the fourth consecutive month there’s been an increase.

Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Karla Davis says that the increase is one-tenth of a percentage point increase over the previous month.

Tennessee’s jobless rate has now climbed four-tenths above the national  unemployment rate of 8.1 percent.

Tennessean Says Child Deaths Need Closer Look

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — The Tennessee Department of Children's Services says 31 children whose care the department had under investigation died in the first half of this year.

Tennessean reporter Anita Wadhwani and state Rep. Sherry Jones partnered to bring the numbers to light.

According to Wadhwani, 10 of the children were the subjects of ongoing investigations by DCS. None of those children were more than one year old.

Artwalk Event Scheduled for Downtown Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (ANFINSON)  --  Main Street businesses in Murfreesboro are joining forces to support the arts.

Following on the success of Nashville’s popular Artcrawl, MTSU sculpture student, Russell White is coordinating an Artwalk in Murfreesboro.

Local art lovers can hop from one Main Street venue to the next and view a variety of work made by local artists like Glen Merchant. Merchant is also the owner of Moxie Art Supply, which will serve as one the Artwalk venues.

Annual Conference Explores Economic Outlook

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Business and finance executives from across Middle Tennessee will converge on Murfreesboro Friday for the annual Middle Tennessee State University Economic Outlook Conference.

Dr. Jim Burton, Dean of the MTSU College of Business, says he’s expecting well over 100 executives and a few students to attend. This year’s special emphasis will be on the banking sector and Tennessee Banking Commissioner Greg Gonzalez will be the featured speaker.

Burton says the conference is underwritten through a fund created by the late Jennings A. Jones.
