Environmental Perspective on the 107th General Assembly

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  What does the recently completed 107th Tennessee General Assembly look like from an environmentalist’s perspective? WMOT News continues to invite news makers from around the state to give us their take on this year’s legislative session.

John McFadden is the Director of the Tennessee Environmental Council. McFadden couldn’t site the advancement of any environmental issues during the Assembly, but instead measured success thsi year in the defeat of at least two bills.

Record Heat Possible Memorial Day Weekend

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  -- Warm weather is always welcome as Tennesseans head out-of-doors to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend, but the Weather Service says the state may mark the traditional beginning of summer with record heat.

Nashville office Weather Service Meteorologist Sam Herron says there’s a good chance some hundred year-old high temperature records may fall in the next few days. He says Tennessee is seeing a summertime weather pattern nearly a month before summer actually begins.

Middle Tenn. Chaplain Recalls Joplin Disaster

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A Middle Tennessee Chaplain who specializes in disaster assistance is thinking this week about the tornado survivors he met one year ago in Joplin, Missouri.

An EF5 tornado swept through Joplin May 22, 2011. The storm killed 161 people and wiped out entire neighborhoods, along with a hospital and ten public schools.

15,000 Students Descend on UT Knoxville

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  More than 15,000 students and their supporters arrive in Knoxville Wednesday for an international creativity competition on the University of Tennessee campus.

Students from across the U.S. and 13 foreign countries are converging on UT for Destination Imagination’s four-day, annual Global Finals contest.

Destination Imagination is a 13 year-old educational program that fosters creative problem solving through global competition.

Tenn. Produce Arriving Early Due to Warm Spring

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Tennessee’s strawberry season is quickly coming to a close. This spring’s mild weather resulted in an early and unusually rich harvest.

State Agriculture’s Tammy Algood says you can expect other summer produce to arrive ahead of schedule as well because the early spring allowed farmers to get their crops in quickly.

“They can look for lettuce to continue, green onions to continue, early Yellow Neck and Crook Neck squash and zucchinis, as well as some smaller, like pickling cucumbers.”
